Sweco to plan new cultural centre in Umeå
Sweco has been commissioned by Balticgruppen Byggproduktion for services in connection with construction of the new cultural centre in Umeå. The building has an area of 25,000 square metres and Sweco will be responsible for all heating, water, sanitation and sprinkler systems. The contract is worth nearly EUR 570,000.
“This is a prestigious project for us. The new cultural centre will be an important meeting place for the people of Umeå, with a strong focus on energy-efficient solutions and a good indoor climate,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm, President of Sweco Systems in Sweden.
The project is being carried out as a general contractorship and Sweco will prepare system, tender and construction documents.
About the new cultural centre in Umeå:
Umeå has been named European Capital of Culture 2014 and the city’s spectacular new cultural centre will stand completed in time for the inauguration. The building will be located directly by the river and will contain cultural facilities, an indoor plaza for shops and restaurants/cafés and a hotel. The building varies in height from 4 to 13 floors.
Challenges:
One challenge in the project is that partly for architectural reasons, all technical areas will be placed on the lower semi-basement level where the ceiling height is very limited, which will place high demands on the creativity of the building service system consultants.
Another challenge will be to find energy-efficient system solutions. In this context, Sweco will among other things study the possibilities to use solar heating for pre-heating of tap water and absorption cooling for air conditioning.
