Sweco commissioned for sustainable packaging solutions initiative

December 16, 2016 | Press release

Sweco has been commissioned by BillerudKorsnäs for construction management of a new board manufacturing machine at the Gruvön production plant and structural design for reconstruction of the existing pulp mill.

The project is being carried out in view of the increased global demand for sustainable food and beverage packaging solutions. The end result will be a packaging facility that contributes to reducing fossil dependency, climate impact and littering while improving food security.

”The ability to package products in a way that minimises climate impact is a key issue for the future. Together with our customer, we are creating a sustainable, cutting-edge production facility,” says Åsa Bergman, President of Sweco Sweden.

Sweco’s project involves construction management of the entire investment – the new board machine as well as reconstruction of the existing pulp mill. Sweco is also responsible for structural design of the reconstruction.

“Sweco has extensive experience in complex industrial projects throughout Europe, and we have a strong local presence in the area. In this project, we will help our customer utilise a valuable, local raw material: the renewable Nordic forest,” says Åsa Bergman.

The new cardboard machine will have an annual production capacity of 550,000 tonnes, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world. According to BillerudKorsnäs, the entire investment totals SEK 5.7 billion.

Sweco’s work on the project will start immediately. The new plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2019.
