SWECO to supervise wastewater treatment project in Romania

December 5, 2006 | Press release

SWECO VIAK has been awarded a sizeable contract by the City of Bucharest for modernisation of the capital’s wastewater treatment plant. The assignment, valued at approximately EUR 3.8 million, is scheduled for completion in 2010.

SWECO VIAK will provide the City of Bucharest with technical, financial and legal services for rehabilitation and upgrading of the city’s wastewater treatment plant. The assignment also includes planning for expansion of the sewage system, drafting of agreements and assistance in finding financing solutions for future investments.

“SWECO VIAK is continuing to win major international contracts in connection with upgrading and enlargement of existing treatment plants. Romania is an important market where massive investments are being made in preparation for EU membership,” says Christer Andersson, Overseas Manager at SWECO VIAK.

Bucharest’s wastewater treatment plant, which serves some 2.5 million residents, is being upgraded to meet EU standards. SWECO VIAK will carry out the assignment in collaboration with the UK-based consulting company Halcrow and French Sogreah. The project will be EU-funded and has an estimated total cost of around EUR 1 billion.

SWECO VIAK is already involved in similar projects in Turkey, Hungary, Jordan and Ukraine.
