Sweco to plan new railway in Gothenburg

February 15, 2013 | Press release

Sweco has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to plan parts of the Hamnbanan project in Gothenburg, which will increase capacity for rail freight transports to the Port of Gothenburg. The contract is worth over SEK 20 million for Sweco.

“The Hamnbanan project is an important initiative for both the City of Gothenburg and the entire region. The fact that we were awarded this contract is an acknowledgement of Sweco’s comprehensive technical expertise in the railway, tunnel construction and environmental areas”, says Johan Dozzi, President of Sweco Infrastructure.

In the assignment, Sweco will prepare railway plan, environmental impact assessment and system documents. The project consists of a double-track tunnel under the Eriksberg area and an additional track left of the Älvsborg Bridge to the rail yard at Skandia Harbour. The new two-kilometre double-track railway will replace an existing single-track line, thereby increasing capacity for freight transports to and from the Port of Gothenburg. Around half of the distance will be built underground, which will lead to reduced noise disruptions for local residents. The initiative also means that the land on which the old railway is situated can be made available for other construction.

The assignment will be carried out in cooperation between Sweco’s experts in the railway, tunnel construction, environmental, land and geotechnical engineering areas. Work will continue until the summer of 2014.
