Sweco receives major order for a ten-year railway project in the Öresund Region

March 31, 2022 | Press release

Sweco has been tasked with project planning for the replacement of signal systems at key hubs for Swedish railways. The project will introduce the ERTMS signal system that is driving railway digitalisation and facilitating high-speed trains. The order is valued at SEK 107 million.

The Swedish Transport Administration has tasked the architecture and engineering consultancy Sweco with the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). ERTMS is an EU-wide standard for signal systems and a prerequisite for increased automation and future high-speed trains.

“Sweco is the most frequently engaged consultant in transportation infrastructure with some 500 railway experts in Sweden, and we are delighted to be entrusted with this contract. We have worked with a number of extensive projects in the Malmö region and look forward to continuing to build a sustainable society through modern transportation networks together with the Swedish Transport Administration,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, President of Sweco Sweden.

The assignment entails preparing tender documentation and construction documents for the replacement of systems related to the control areas of Malmö Central Station, Fosieby and part of Peberholm.

The signal systems enable secure control of rail traffic, but today’s facilities are beginning to become outdated, which increases the risk of traffic disruption. According to the Swedish Transport Administration, 25 per cent of the signal systems will have passed their technical service life by 2025.

Sweco’s assignment is expected to continue until 2031.
