Sweco acquires imp GmbH in Germany

June 4, 2019 | Press release

Sweco takes the next step of the growth journey in Germany through the acquisition of imp GmbH – a consulting company with 380 employees active predominantly in the power transmission and distribution networks markets.

The power generation market in Germany is transforming rapidly as renewable power generation is replacing nuclear and fossil power. This transition places completely new requirements on transmission and distribution networks, with major investments planned. The acquisition will significantly strengthen Sweco’s ability to support this transition. In addition, the expertise within imp GmbH will improve Sweco’s ability to serve infrastructure clients in general.

“We are delighted to welcome the staff of imp GmbH to Sweco. By joining forces, we become even better positioned to support Germany’s effort to curb climate change and the transition towards renewable energy. Our long-term ambition in Germany is clear. We want to grow and expand our market leadership, to even better serve clients and attract talent”, said Åsa Bergman, President and CEO of Sweco.

With around 380 employees, imp GmbH has extensive expertise and decades of experience. Services include transmission line planning, GIS, information value management, surveying, approval management and land acquisition. Imp GmbH has a full-year revenue of approximately EUR 20 million (SEK 210 million) and an EBITA of approximately EUR 2 million (SEK 21 million).

Ina Brandes, Business Area President Sweco Germany & Central Europe said: “The combination of our areas of expertise is a perfect match, and jointly we can offer our clients a one-stop-shop experience. In addition, we have known each other for many years, and we are convinced that together we will be able to offer solutions for many of the challenges our clients are facing – be it the energy transition with the rapid expansion of transmission grids, the coal energy phase-out or the investment backlog in infrastructure. Sweco and imp GmbH will become the leading provider of architectural, engineering and environmental services in Germany.”

“Imp and Sweco complement each other perfectly in their range of services. We are happy to develop our company further with a strong partner and to open up new markets together. We see many opportunities for our clients and employees to benefit from joining forces”, said imp’s Managing Partners Wolfgang Becker and Rainer Koehne, explaining the decision. Both will remain with Sweco in their existing roles.

Sweco is Germany’s leading engineering consultancy. With the acquisition, Sweco Germany will have an annual turnover of about EUR 135 million (SEK 1,400 million) and 1,420 employees in 35 offices across the country.
