Sweco wins 250 MSEK contract for new metro line in Stockholm

November 14, 2023 | Press release

Sweco has been awarded a new contract in connection to the ongoing expansion of the Stockholm metro. The client is Region Stockholm which is making one of the largest ever investments in the Stockholm metro network. The new contract follows several other projects that Sweco has carried out for the new Stockholm metro line since 2014.

Stockholm’s metro network handles over 1.1 million passengers daily and is planned to be expanded significantly as the region is growing rapidly. Since 2014, Sweco and Spanish partner TYPSA, have successfully provided services such as architectural, civil and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design, as well as visualization images and media of the new stations to be built.

“Sweco is proud to be a long-term partner to the Stockholm metro expansion project. This is a major urban development project for a growing region in need of more sustainable public transport systems. We have been working with Region Stockholm on this since 2014 and we understand the complexity of the extension project, we designed the new stations on the line. This will enable us to deploy the right experts at the right time, to deliver this large project in a successful way,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, President of Sweco in Sweden.

Under the new contract, Sweco and partner TYPSA will be delivering site supervision, works coordination and expert support services for all utilities, the railway and its supporting systems, for the implementation of a 11.5 kilometres long metro line in Stockholm, including seven new stations. The project started in November 2023 and is planned to be completed in 2030.

The new metro line will connect to the existing Kungsträdgården station in downtown Stockholm and run through bedrock and underwater under an inlet of the Baltic Sea, with one of its stations located 100 metres below ground level, to the Nacka Municipality in the east of Stockholm.
