Tina Karlberg leads Sweco Sweden’s international operations in her role as President of Sweco International. She was recently appointed to the Board of FIDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, and will be part of Sweco’s delegation attending the ReBuild Ukraine international exhibition and conference.

The event serves as a key platform for recovery projects, materials, technologies, equipment and investments essential to rebuilding Ukraine’s war-torn economy, with a strong focus on infrastructure, industry, energy and housing. We caught up with Tina to hear her thoughts on Sweco’s role in Ukraine ahead of the conference.

Sweco has been active in Ukraine for decades. How do you see the company’s role today — not only in rebuilding what was destroyed, but in helping shape a greener, more resilient Ukraine for the future?

Sweco contributes to Ukraine’s reconstruction and strengthens societal resilience. We also help cities and regions prepare for a peaceful future and support Ukraine in gradually meeting EU membership requirements, such as in waste management.

What strengths or core capabilities does Sweco bring to the reconstruction and recovery effort in Ukraine — and how are you tailoring those to meet the specific context and scale of what’s required there?

Sweco leverages experience from Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and home markets for example, in energy, water, wastewater, waste management, and sustainable urban development. Our expertise includes capacity development, feasibility studies, and Owner’s Engineer in construction supervision, tailored to Ukraine’s needs.

Sweco emphasises its “green expertise” in Ukraine. Could you describe how sustainable design principles are being integrated into infrastructure and urban planning projects there?

Our Swedish experience emphasises sustainability and circular solutions throughout the project cycle. We promote green designs with low maintenance needs, propose sustainable approaches, and advocate for integrated planning to create synergies and avoid suboptimisation.

Lastly, what are you hoping to gain from the ReBuild Ukraine 2025 conference?

We aim to engage in fruitful discussions with Ukrainian stakeholders, committed to supporting their green, resilient development for the long term.
