Lighting design for social sustainability

Tranebergsängen

Tranebergsängen is a park that has been revitalised with a strong focus on lighting to create an inviting atmosphere and enhance enjoyment. By using different lighting zones, the various parts of the park are highlighted, creating a diverse character. Light plays an important role in creating a safe and pleasant environment both during the evening and daytime.

Lighting solutions for an attractive park

The Traneberg Bridge is an iconic landmark in Stockholm that connects the central districts with the suburban areas to the west. At the northwestern end of the bridge lies Tranebergsängen, a park that was previously in poor condition and contributed to a sense of insecurity in the area. The park has now been renovated with a focus on creating a pleasant atmosphere through lighting. It has been designed to encourage activity and recreation for all who visit the area. To promote play and exploration, the lighting levels in the playgrounds for younger children vary more than in other parts of the park. Specifically selected objects are highlighted with focused light in the evening to create mood and atmosphere. Taller poles with floodlights are used to create playful shadows and stimulate the imagination. The lighting levels in the park are relatively high, with somewhat lower contrasts to aid orientation in the areas where higher-speed activities may take place. The pool in the park is illuminated with circular patterns to promote evening dips during late summer and imaginative play during the winter months.

A safe and inviting place for everyone

On the eastern side of the park, a cosy and intimate atmosphere is created with low lighting levels, catering to older visitors. Here, there are barbecue areas, benches, petanque lanes, and other spots for relaxation and socialising. Canopies with integrated lighting have been specially constructed to create an inviting atmosphere. The combination of downward-facing lighting on the outdoor furniture and upward-facing lighting on the roofing gives the space a nice feeling.

Tranebergsängen is designed to invite and inspire all visitors to enjoy the park and take a moment to relax. The main pathway in the park features a simple and clear lighting solution to facilitate guidance and orientation between different areas. The pathways and  outdoor gym remain illuminated even after 10 p.m. when the lighting for activities and play is switched off.
