Under the new Urban Insight initiative, Sweco’s experts will explore ways in which various urban structures in Europe influence citizens’ ability to meet needs and preferences. The reports also describe how this ultimately influences the way urban areas are structured.

Urban Insight is based on a series of insight reports written by Sweco experts. It is a long-term initiative with a different theme each year. The theme for 2018 is Urban Move, focusing on mobility and sustainable development of transports in Europe.

This first report, Redefining Bridges and Tunnels for the Next Generation of Our Cities, written by an expert team in Norway, marks the start of a year-long commitment to Urban Move. Experts from across Sweco will share their knowledge and insights on this theme, focused on different aspects of urban development from a citizen perspective.

In Redefining Bridges and Tunnels for the Next Generation of Our Cities, Sweco’s experts explain why tunnels and bridges should no longer be considered only as structures to facilitate transport. Rather, the areas they occupy and spaces they create should offer added value, improving citizens’ quality of life by simplifying or beautifying the city. The authors also provide examples of bridges and tunnels that have solved urban challenges and become flexible, multifunctional structures in cities of different scales by adding value to the city and its inhabitants.
