Lighting that contributes to a peaceful atmosphere

Råcksta Cemetery

The new lighting at Råcksta Cemetery outside Stockholm contributes to a peaceful atmosphere in a historic location. Here, relatives can visit in a natural environment where the light gently enhances the landscape without overpowering it.

Lighting that extends landscape architecture

The lighting design follows the original landscape architect’s intention to create spatiality through colour, simple shapes, and materials. Specially designed park fixtures have been developed with inspiration from the original design and created through prototypes, site tests, and careful evaluation of the interplay between light and the surroundings.

A place for remembrance and reflection

The topography has been preserved with the valley and its sightlines as key elements. Discreet lighting highlights selected tree crowns, allowing them to stand out against the evening sky. The new stormwater pond with seating has become a focal point in the landscape – where integrated lighting in the benches is reflected in the water, creating a tranquil environment for stillness and reflection. Fixtures, poles, and colours have been chosen to harmonise with the original expression of the place. Along the walkways, visual comfort has been improved, while other areas have been deliberately left unlit to preserve darkness.

Interaction between light, architecture and nature

The new lighting design has been developed through close collaboration between lighting designers, landscape architects, and building conservationists. The cultural environment analysis has been a central part of the work – as well as the ambition to reduce light pollution and energy consumption. The result is a sustainable lighting solution that strengthens the architectural qualities of the place, protects the nocturnal environment, and creates security without disturbing the tranquility.
