A modern building for security and safety
Örnsköldsvik Police station
As the northern Swedish city Örnsköldsvik grows, the need for essential community functions that reinforce regional security increases. Sweco has designed a new police station, in collaboration with the Swedish Police Authority, Örnsköldsvik Municipality, and property company Kåpan. A new police station for future needs
The police’s working methods are constantly evolving, placing new requirements on facilities. As a result, the decision has been made to build a new police station in Örnsköldsvik – a modern building of approximately 10,000 square metres that will house offices, meeting rooms, training areas, a goods reception, workshop, garage and other operational spaces.
The building is meticulously planned to meet the operations’ requirements for security, sustainability and working environment – while also expressing openness and accessibility to the public.
Design inspired by the unique coastal nature of the area
The design draws inspiration from the dramatic coast near Örnsköldsvik. The police station is designed with a rounded form where the layers vary in angle, to remind local residents of the rock formation on the island of Skrubban. This creates a dynamic interplay of shadows in daylight, making the building a landmark that ties into the area’s history.
Comprehensive expertise in a complex project
Sweco is both the architect and the principal consultant for the project, bringing together a wide range of expertise under one roof. The project combines Sweco experts’ knowledge in building architecture, landscape architecture, structural engineering, transport and infrastructure, acoustics, HVAC, electrical and telecoms, environmental management, as well as stormwater management and land planning. The seamless collaboration has been a crucial success factor.
Safety, security and sustainability
In an uncertain world, the need for robust and secure public buildings increases. The police station in Örnsköldsvik is designed to create a safe working environment for police employees – around the clock, every day of the year – while the building also signals stability and security to the public.
The project is to be environmentally certified according to the Sweden Green Building Council’s Miljöbyggnad Silver level and has integrated solutions for stormwater and flooded areas risks from the outset, using natural methods that also promote biodiversity on the property.
