Continuation of a successful concept
Following the success of BIC Cluster 1, which opened in 2019 and houses nearly fifty companies, Sweco’s architects have been commissioned to help create BIC Cluster 2. The new section will be twice the size of the first cluster, covering 225,000 square metres.
The concept of BIC, with shared facilities where various high-tech manufacturing companies can come together and learn from each other and where an innovative work environment is complemented by exercise and nature, has proven very successful.
Architecture that blends into the landscape
The design principle for the new section is clear: Cluster 2 is a guest in the Brabant landscape. It will consist of modules referred to as stripes , each between 200 to 350 metres long and 25 metres wide. The varying lengths of these stripes create a dynamic facade and a pleasant sense of scale to the surroundings. The saw-tooth shaped roofs, inspired by traditional industrial roofing, provide excellent daylight and a pleasant working environment.
Through smart positioning and design, the stripes blend seamlessly with the existing landscape contours. This approach maximises the preservation of the landscape and protected nature, fostering a strong connection between the industrial area and the surrounding environment. To further integrate the landscape into the building, three stripes have been omitted. In two of these areas, space is created to evoke the landscape through the building, while the third offers a central logistical artery that serves all companies in the complex.
The combination of architecture and nature makes the campus a unique, healthy and green working environment. BIC cluster 2 stimulates encounters and collaboration between different users and visitors, making the campus a catalyst for innovation.
Collaboration that supports economic security
BIC is a collaboration between the Municipality of Eindhoven, Brainport Industries, the North Brabant Province, Brabant Development Company (BOM), and real estate company SDK Vastgoed. Given the geopolitical challenges, BIC is crucial for both the economic security of the Netherlands and the strategic autonomy of Europe.
