Facade illustrating the client’s industrial activities

Epiroc’s heat treatment facility

When Epiroc was planning a new heat treatment facility adjacent to the existing production plant in Örebro, Sweden, they wanted the building to reflect their operations with a facade reminiscent of the wall of a mine. Epiroc is a global company that provides innovative solutions for the mining and construction industries. With the new heat treatment plant, the quality and performance of the rock drilling rigs produced there will be enhanced.

Parametric facade design enhances Epiroc’s facility

Many people pass by the facility, so Epiroc wanted to use it to promote the company’s activities. The solution was to create such a wall using 3D concrete elements. The facade was modelled in a 3D programme, in conjunction with parametric design. By using parametric design, adjustments could be made in alignment with changing conditions throughout the entire process, from the feasibility study to the project design.

3D facade design creates a unique and dynamic appearance

Each concrete element contained varying triangles that formed polygons, which collectively resembled the wall of a mine. The elements measured 2.4×10.5 metres, and the pattern of each individual element needed to be adapted within these dimensions. The modules were repeated and flipped upside down across the 62-metre-long facade in what can be considered a randomly laid pattern, ensuring that no obvious repetitions could be detected.

Smart lightning solution brings the facade to life

To further showcase the operations, gobo (“Go Between Optics”) fixtures were used to project images of Epiroc’s machines directly onto the facade wall. This way, the wall comes alive both during the day and at night, illustrating Epiroc’s activities in an interesting and distinctive manner for passing pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and visitors to Epiroc’s office located north of the heat treatment plant. This innovative approach to industrial building architecture ensures that Epiroc’s new facility stands out.
