Sweco’s Flood Portal: A digital solution for urban resilience
Published on: April 16, 2025
With more frequent extreme rainfall and climate-related flooding, municipalities in Sweden are facing new challenges. Sweco’s Flood Portal is a digital decision-support tool tjat helps cities prepare for and manage high water levels before they become a problem.
The portal combines hydraulic models with forecast data from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) to provide real-time insights into water levels and flood risks. Through visual maps, users can clearly see which areas are likely to be affected. This makes it easier to plan preventive actions — like deploying temporary barriers or coordinating an emergency response — before a crisis unfolds.
Sweco has extensive experience in watercourse modelling and flood mapping. One example is the Värnamo Flood Portal, developed to support monitoring of the rivers Lagan and Storån.
Key benefits of the portal include:
- Improved preparedness and reduced damages
- Easier planning of emergency and maintenance efforts
- Possibility for public information sharing
- Long-term support for climate adaptation and urban resilience
