Where AI meets human expertise: Transforming how infrastructure is delivered

Published on: April 10, 2026

The rapid advancement of AI and digitalisation is transforming the conditions for planning, designing and operating societal infrastructure. Data analysis, modelling and automated processes are becoming central to how projects are delivered, enabling improved decision-making and advisory capacity.

At Sweco, this development deepens the value of our experts by enhancing analysis, accelerating design and strengthening collaboration across projects. In this context, digital transformation is not only about technology, but about how people, expertise and AI come together to deliver better outcomes for clients.

In this interview, Luka Obuljen, Chief Digital Officer at Sweco Belgium, shares his perspective on how digitalisation is changing the industry, from improving collaboration and efficiency to enabling better decision-making and new services for clients. He also reflects on the role of AI, the importance of people in digital transformation and how Sweco is building a future-ready organisation where technology and expertise go hand in hand.

It’s not just about introducing new tools, it’s about transforming our processes to be more efficient, raising the quality of what we deliver, and creating more value for our clients.

What are the latest developments in digital transformation at Sweco?

Sweco is accelerating its digital journey by integrating AI into daily workflows, scaling BIM and digital twins and strengthening data-driven engineering across projects to improve quality, speed and sustainability.

Can you share an example of a digital solution that has provided data-driven value to clients?

A recent example is Sweco’s Flexibility Tool, which has transformed project outcomes by turning complex energy challenges into clear and actionable insights. The tool uses smart simulations and data analytics to show how flexible assets such as batteries or electric boilers can respond to dynamic energy prices, reduce peak consumption and strengthen the business case for new investments. Clients can quickly compare scenarios, understand financial impacts and make confident decisions without time consuming manual calculations, leading to noticeably faster and more sustainable project results.

What distinguishes a successful digital transformation journey from simply adopting new tools or technologies?

Sweco focuses on impact, not just tools. Successful transformation combines measurable value creation, empowered people and smarter, integrated processes supported by clear strategic alignment. It is ultimately about changing how an organisation works and collaborates so that technology becomes an enabler of better decisions rather than an end goal in itself.

Looking ahead, which emerging technologies or trends are you most excited about?

AI driven automation, increasingly powerful digital twins, predictive analytics and advanced smart building automation are shaping the next wave of digital innovation. These technologies will unlock deeper insight, faster decision making and new possibilities for designing and operating more resilient and sustainable environments.
