Food tech company ENOUGH, formerly 3F BIO, is pioneering high scale sustainable protein production, to tackle the combined issues of feeding a growing global population and the unsustainable impact of sole reliance on traditional protein farming.

The company has plans to build a new mycoprotein plant in Sas van Gent, The Netherlands. This will be one of the largest fermented protein factories in the world where mycoprotein, a high-quality protein source that is a sustainable substitute for meat will be produced.

Pioneering high- scale sustainable protein production

Work is underway for the factory project to have an initial production capacity equivalent to five (5) cow’s worth of protein every hour, totalling some 10,000 tonnes of protein per year with the start of the complete site in 2022.
The ambitious project, called Unity, includes a complete greenfield 10kT production facility, the first of its kind as a zero-waste production plant. The project also consists of office buildings, a tank farm, CIP installation, production building including reactors and centrifuge, packaging and freezing areas, and cooling towers.
Sweco has been awarded the full EPCm scope with the responsibility for the Detailed Design and Procurement of the technical installations. Other services also include Construction Management, Commissioning and Start-up assistance.
In addition, Sweco will closely cooperate with third parties Heinrich Frings Gm bH & Co. KG, who will provide the fermentation process’ design, and KOCH Adviesgroep, who will take on the civil and architectural design.

A 15,000 m2 zero-waste facility

The 15,000 m2 facility is co-located alongside the Cargill facility in Sas van Gent, in the Netherlands. The location and collaboration with Cargill will ensure the most efficient feed source, as well as supporting zero-waste advantages of ENOUGH’s product. The investment initially creates 25 new jobs, and this will double as there are plans for more than 50,000 tonnes of capacity by 2027.

Support from Bio Based Europe Joint Undertaking

The new facility is one of 11 Flagship projects which have support from the circular Bio Based Europe Joint Undertaking, while contribute to enhancing sustainability and creating new bio-based jobs and products. The flagship facility has received € 16.9 million funding as part of project Plenitude which involves partners from the full value chain.

“ENOUGH invests in a sustainable solution for the global food/protein transition, as the impact, and associated water consumption, of the food industry must be drastically reduced. The demand for non-animal proteins is expected to grow explosively in the coming years. Demand will grow 15,000 tonnes per day over the next 5,000 days. ENOUGH is using technology that is scalable today to contribute to the protein transition of tomorrow.”
