Climate change and increased incidents of extreme weather have a major impact on buildings. This was on display in the major flooding that occurred in the Netherlands during 2021. For property owners, this creates the need to understand and the ability to calculate the risks imposed by climate change when they invest in, develop or lease properties.

Working with property investor Vesteda, Sweco developed KIM, a software tool that specifies the risk of flooding and heat waves for the company’s entire property portfolio, along with initiatives that can be taken to reduce these risks. This solution gives Vesteda a deeper understanding of and the capacity to deal with sustainability-related risks to all of its properties.

In addition to the risks, the tool also visualizes real actions. What measures can be taken to manage those risks? For example, if sun protection is installed or the threshold is raised, how does it impact on the risk score? – Jelmer van de Ridder, Project manager & Consultant climate adaptation
