A school designed as a shared community hub

Selbu Secondary School

When the Norwegian secondary school in Selbu needed new premises, an opportunity arose to create a facility that could benefit the entire community. Sweco’s architects were commissioned by Selbu Municipality to design a school with a strong emphasis on shared facilities such as a swimming pool, library, sports hall, and a venue for cultural and creative activities.

A design that highlights the surrounding nature

The new school building has a compact form, with timber as the dominant material. Large glazed areas are also a defining feature, opening up views towards the surrounding landscape. The facility is designed to create a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments, as well as a clear balance between calm and more active zones. An important part of the project has been to introduce daylight even into spaces where there were no formal requirements, enhancing the sense of closeness to the surroundings.

The woodland area to the west of the school has been preserved and continues to serve as a place for recreation and nature-based play. At the same time, a generous and coherent schoolyard has been created to the east, enjoying sunlight throughout the school day.

A meeting place for the whole community

Selbu Lower Secondary School is intended as a meeting place for the community, where emphasis has been placed on generous shared areas. The swimming pool, activity spaces and venue for cultural and creative activities, enable usage that extends beyond the school itself and benefits the entire municipality.

A design based on close dialogue with the school’s stakeholders

The design of the school has been carefully considered, with every square metre optimised for the most efficient use. This has been achieved through close collaboration and continuous dialogue with representatives from the school, as well as many other stakeholders. The result is a school with a simple and clear layout and well-developed technical solutions.

Selbu has gained a meeting place that offers high-quality environments for both learning and play.
