Albert Station
A modern hub for sustainable travel is being created as Albert station is integrated with a new metro line and undergoes a major transformation. Here, the metro, tram, bus and cycle networks will meet in seamless coordination, improving accessibility and making the station the heart of mobility in southern Brussels.

A new transport centre takes shape
The transformation of Albert station is part of the expansion of Line 3, which will become a north-south line complementing the existing metro network, which is mainly oriented east-west. The future metro line will terminate at the level where the tram platform is located today. The floor above, which previously housed a large ticket hall, will be converted into a new tram station. In addition, there will be bus stops for several lines above ground, as well as a new secure cycle parking facility, making it easier for residents to cycle to the station and continue their journey from there.
Design focused on flow, safety and wayfinding
The new layout of the station will lead to greater intensity and complexity in passenger flows. The architectural aim has therefore been to ensure smooth movement, create a sense of safety and give the station its own identity. Meeting and waiting areas will help achieve this, as will open entrances, circulation spaces, waiting areas and adjoining shops. A key priority has been to clarify the connections between the platforms and the upper levels through transparency, colour and noise reduction. The use of sustainable surface and construction materials has also been an important part of the design.
The existing artworks by the artist Jephan de Villiers, which have been associated with Albert station since it was built, will be relocated within the rebuilt station.
Improved accessibility
Another aspect of the design has been to improve accessibility at the station. With five lifts, two of them at ground level, the station will become more accessible for people with reduced mobility. Accessibility will also be enhanced by replacing all the escalators, which will also improve access to the bus stops above ground.
The station will be rebuilt in stages while services remain in operation
The reconstruction, which is expected to be fully completed by 2027, will take place in phases while the station continues to operate. Once complete, the people of Brussels will have a modern, user-friendly station bringing together the metro, trams and buses, while also integrating active travel modes such as cycling.
