Sweco has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to design the completely new railway between Norra Tuvan and central Skellefteå, which is part of the North Bothnia Line. The work is expected to last until 2031, with a total value of approximately SEK 200 million.
The North Bothnia Line is planned to run between Umeå and Luleå, which will be 27 miles of new railway along the Norrland coast. Sweco’s assignment involves detailed design and preparation of construction documents for the section from Norra Tuvan to central Skellefteå. The work needs to be done in an innovative and sustainable way with as little impact on the environment and surroundings as possible, as the railway is being designed in an urban environment.
The area to be projected extends from the passage over the Skellefte River in the east, and parallel to the existing railway through central Skellefteå. In addition to dealing with the complexity of designing in an urban environment, the work focuses on several sustainability aspects: social and economic aspects and ensuring that the facility can be built with as little climate impact as possible.
Work on the construction documents is expected to last until 2024, after which a consultancy contract will run until 2031. The contract value is around SEK 200 million.
Sweco services: Railway design, construction, building design, project management, architecture and environment
I am very proud that Sweco has been entrusted with the design of the important section through Skellefteå on the brand new railway that will run between two of the largest cities on the Norrland coast. Our assignment is very complex as it involves designing a new railway in an urban environment, and it is crucial that we do it in an innovative and sustainable way with as little impact on the environment and surroundings as possible. – Jan Thulin, Business Unit Manager for Sweco’s railway consultants.
