From street to city- a green and diverse district heals Odense
February 8, 2022 | News
A green and connected, car-free district with squares and urban spaces for citizens to enjoy city life was the vision imagined for transforming Thomas B. Thriges Gade in Odense, Denmark. Sweco has worked in close collaboration with Odense Municipality and the developer Realdania, 300 Sweco engineers, landscape architects and urban planning experts on the 10-year project to reconnect the heart of a vibrant city.
The new area was previously a four-lane road that divided Odense’s oldest district in two. More than 25,000 cars passed through the area daily before the transformation.Today, Thomas B. Thriges Gade contains four new neighbourhoods and eight new urban spaces. The district’s unifying identity is a green and fertile landscape – on buildings, roofs, balconies and in the city’s spaces. In addition, a light rail system has been added which winds its way through the district linking it to the new development.
