Integrated Waste Management in the Nelson Mandela Metro
Following a substantial re-organization of its Waste Management Division, Sida decided to support the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality of South Africa with the services of an Integrated Waste Management Advisor for Institutional, Technical and Environmental Development and Capacity Building.
The support commenced with the development of the municipality’s first Integrated Waste Management Plan an exercise that required substantial Capacity Building and established cooperation with other official departments and NGO’s. The final, politically approved plan includes an Action Plan with a large number of projects for the coming years.
The Integrated Waste Management Plan was largely acclaimed as a public-friendly, accessible document. Progress reports are distributed to all interested parties twice a year.
The Advisory Services continued through subsequent Integrated Waste Management Planprojects, incl. Awareness Campaigns on HIV/AIDS, Gender and Environmental Issues, revised local legislation, the establishment of a Waste Information System and more.
The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality was also supported in its Benchmarking Exercise with the City of Gothenburg, aiming to improve both departments’ Customer Care services. The Advisory Services have played a substantial role in supporting the cooperation between the two cities.
