Fewer floods in Mölndal

Enriching project #6 311 of 31 000. Sweco is mapping the water flow in the Mölndal River and proposing measures to prevent flooding.

The Swedish Rescue Services is undertaking an overall mapping of the risk for flooding in Swedish waterways. Floods are expensive and can lead to major property damage. The Mölndal River is a waterway that has overflowed on several occasions, at an enormous cost to society.

Sweco has been chosen to perform a detailed mapping of the water flow in the river in which concrete measures to prevent flooding are proposed. One such example, based on the current situation and future forecasts, is to store water in lakes upstream and regulate the flow with the help of locks. Downstream, near the sea, embankments are being built to protect particularly vulnerable buildings.

All in all, the action programme consists of 15 points that will reduce the risk for future flooding. The investment of more than SEK 100 million represents a limited sum when seen in relation to the latest flood in 2006, when the costs reported by the insurance companies for damage to buildings in the city of Mölndal alone exceeded SEK 100 million.
