Tunnels and underground facilities
Sweco’s international tunnel and cavern engineering team is one of Europe’s leading groups within the field of underground engineering in hard rock conditions. The team includes soil and rock engineers of all disciplines, geologists, hydro-geologists, grouting engineers, TBM-engineers, works staff and equipment for site investigations such as soil and rock testing, underground works supervisors and inspectors, and Project Managers.
The Sweco team works with the planning, design, and works supervision of road and railway tunnels as well as other underground constructions, including closed storage caverns for radioactive waste, caverns for unlined or lined storage of hydrocarbons or other liquids and gas, head- and tailrace tunnels as well as underground power houses for hydropower schemes, additional storages, rescue and emergency centres, etc.
The Nordic countries have a long experience of advanced underground engineering from our home markets through our extensive investment programs during the second half of the twentieth century and beyond in Hydropower, Nuclear Waste Storage, Oil Storage, Strategic Defence and the environmentally adapted planning of roads and railway dominated by underground solutions.
