Rural electrification in Tanzania
Many people in rural Africa lack access to a functioning electricity supply. Electrification will provide local companies with a reliable source of power and lead to the creation of new jobs, while at the same time making people’s everyday lives easier and significantly enhancing their quality of life.
Sweco has taken part in a number of projects related to enlargement and upgrading of Tanzania’s power distribution system. Among other things, Sweco’s energy consultants have studied where in the country energy resources such as wind, solar energy, natural gas, biomass, small-scale hydropower and geothermal energy can be used most effectively to generate electricity. In addition, Sweco has provided assistance in preparation of tender documentation, training of staff and supervision of the tender process to procure contractors for expansion of the power transmission network.
The environmental gains are also considerable, and include reduced emissions from the diesel-fired power plants that currently supply most of the electricity to the cities. Felling of forest for energy uses will also decrease.
