Hydropower

Sweco's experiences within Hydropower and Dams include tailing and water dams, hydrology, hydropower, construction in streams and waterways, flood prevention and management and electro-mechanical engineering.

Sweco's extensive experience and knowledge within the arena has its foundation in the continuous work, which the company has carried out since the development of hydropower during the 20th century. There is significant knowledge regarding waterways, regulation dams, storage tanks, turbines, generators and control equipment.

In our work with hydropower, a number of components are included which all have significance in terms of our capabilities with regards to flooding. The clearing of streams, spillway capacity, calculations of water surface areas, lake and sea regulation, domestic water planning, review of CFD-calculations, production planning, water supply companies, dimensioning of spillways and canals, tidal wave and dam defects are just a few of the applications which have contributed to the companies expertise in hydropower technology.

Within the arena of Hydropower and Dams, Sweco has a specialised team working with hydrology and the hydrological modelling of streams and catchments areas. Assignments include lake and sea regulation, production calculations, investigations of dam faults and flood planning.

In recent years, Sweco has been working extensively within the arena of dam safety through the rehabilitation of some of our largest dams in order to prevent extreme flooding. Investments in programming material for 2-D modelling of lakes, streams and coastal water are included in our latest venture.

The rehabilitation and upgrading of existing hydropower plants have become an increasingly important issue for power producers wordwide. By refurbishing or replacing aged electro-mechanical equipment e.g. turbines, generators and control equipment with modern state of the art technology, production Iosses can often be significantly reduced at the same time as the availability of the power plant increases. After rehabilitation, the power production facility will serve its owner with another 30 years or so of efficient, reliable and emission free production of electricity.

Sweco's engineers have the highest level of experience and knowledge within the field rehabilitation and upgrading of power plants, gained from numerous projects both in Sweden and worldwide. Our engineers carry out feasibility studies for the evaluation of the potential for improvement and recommendation of investment, principal design of new equipment adopted to the existing power plant and quality assurance during the manufacturing and installation of the equipment.
