Water tower to become round housing in Estonian city of Pärnu

Sweco was chosen for an exciting project, to prepare construction documents for a new residential complex in Pärnu, Estonia. But this is not just any old apartment building. A former water tower will be transformed into a new tower, for people.

The project is called Veetorn which means water tower in Estonian.

This former water tower dating from the 1960s is around 30 meters high and 12 meters in diameter. The tower will be torn down and the new structure will be built on the same site. The first five floors will be somewhat wider than before, while the five top floors will have the same shape as the earlier water tower.

The residents of Pärnu, a former seaside resort some 120 km south of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, will be able to retain the cityscape they are accustomed to.

Sweco drafted the first design proposal for the new tower, which has a modernistic feeling. Once the proposal was approved by the client, Sweco in Estonia accepted tenders for construction documents last autumn. The choice went to Sweco in Sweden.

Veetorn's round contours have required some fairly unusual solutions when Sweco prepared the drawings. Geometrically, it was definitely a challenge to draw .
