Sweco designing the Skogsgläntan preschool with low-energy technology

Enriching project #18 563 of 31 000. The preschool has been planned according to the Reggio Emilia approach, where the educational philosophy is based on a strong belief in the child’s possibilities. Through exploration, discovery and community, the children develop all of their opportunities for expression.

The layout has been designed with large common areas for creative and exploratory activities. The different departments are placed in twos in direct contact with the central core, to encourage interaction and creativity. The building’s contents are reflected in the volumes. The high angled building containing the departments embraces the low building with common spaces. A roof lantern brings daylight to the heart of the building.

The preschool is a low-energy building with a maximum energy demand of 55 kWh/m²/year. A compact volume, a well insulated and air-tight construction, windows with low U-values and heat recovery from exhaust air are a few of the design principles used to meet this requirement. District heating is used as a supplement when needed and solar panels on south-facing roofs contribute to heating of water.
