Sweco optimising newspaper distribution
Enriching project #22,131 of 31,000. Some 500 vehicles distribute the newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet to 12,000 resellers. How can the transport costs be minimised? The contract went to Sweco’s GIS consultants and the results are very positive, not least for the environment.

Two of Sweden’s largest tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen, use the same distributors to transport their newspapers throughout the country every day. Their goal is to deliver the new issue to the 12,000 resellers as quickly as possible after they are printed while at the same time minimising transport costs. Sweco’s GIS consultants have been chosen to help the distribution departments enhance the efficiency of their operations.
After one and a half years in operation they have optimised areas containing 78 vehicles (of a total of 500) and the result is a decrease to 59, which means a 24 per cent reduction in the number of vehicles. At the same time, the newspapers could be delivered to the stores as early as before. Measured in carbon dioxide emissions, this is equal to a realised decrease of around 50,000 kg.
