Sweco to upgrade Russian pulp and paper mill
In northwestern Russia, a large-scale project is under way to build a modern and environmentally sustainable pulp and paper mill. Thanks to its experience and holistic approach, Sweco has been chosen to supply architectural and structural engineering services.
Sweco has been awarded a contract to assist with the renovation and expansion of a pulp and paper mill in the city of Syktyvkar in northwestern Russia. Sweco's structural engineers will be responsible for the building permit process, work documents and construction management.
The project will involve a great deal of new construction, an area where Sweco will play a central coordinating role. Due to the tight schedule, Sweco's consultants must work in parallel with other disciplines such as process engineering and mechanical design.
Meeting the requirements of the Russian authorities is another complex aspect of the project. A paper mill of the type in Syktyvkar contains a vast amount of machinery, pipes, ducts and high voltage technology. This creates challenging conditions for fire protection, something that Sweco must take into consideration in its structural design.
Although Russia is a dynamic growth market, a large share of its factories and properties are still in very poor shape.
One important result of the renovation will be a reduction in environmentally hazardous emissions from the mill. The installation of a flue gas cleaning system and the changeover to a closed process are two contributing factors.
