Gondolas on the Globe
Enriching project #4 557 of 31 000. Stockholm SkyView is the name of the glass gondolas that take passengers up the outside of the Ericsson Globe Arena. From the top, at 130 meters above sea level, you can see all of Stockholm. Sweco has been responsible for project and construction management of an undertaking subject to stringent safety requirements.
The Ericsson Globe Arena is the world’s largest spherical building and one of Sweden and Stockholm’s best known landmarks. Since its inauguration in 1989, around 2,200 events have been held at the Globe for a total public of close to 18 million people.
Sweco’s assignment has been technically challenging in many ways, among other things requiring reinforcement of large parts of the Globe’s framework to bear the new load from the gondolas. No fewer than 42 tonnes of custom fitted steel have been assembled by mountain climbers. The rails that the gondolas travel on weigh 70 tonnes. In addition, all work has been carried out simultaneously with ongoing activities in the arena, placing rigorous demands on effective construction and project management.
Sweco has carried out its work in collaboration with NCC and Stockholm Globe Arenas. Stockholm SkyView was opened in February 2010. A trip takes around 20 minutes, with departures 6 times per hour.
