Mining project in Talvivaara

Sweco delivers engineering services for Europe’s largest nickel mine.

The Talvivaara deposits form one of the largest known sulphide nickel resources in Europe. Aside from nickel, the mine also produces copper, zinc and cobalt.

The Talvivaara mine uses a process known as bioheap leaching to extract the metals from the ore, a technology that enables cost-effective and environmentally-friendly exploitation of the resource.

Sweco has been previously commissioned for pre-engineering of the mine project. In the subsequent execution phase, Sweco was responsible for the layout, equipment, piping, electrical engineering and automation.
