Opening of Malmö City Tunnel
12/13/2010
A journey that begun in 1999 has now reached its end, though the result means thousands of new journeys can begin.

Sweco has been involved in the project since the start in 1999, among other things through the provision of consulting services in the areas of geotechnical engineering, rock engineering, environmental technology, structural engineering and building service systems and engineering design.
Representatives from Sweco and the City Tunnel accentuated cooperation and good risk management as some of the most important reasons to why the work with the tunnel has been so successful.
The official opening ceremony of the City Tunnel in Malmö took place on the 4th of December in front of the Swedish king, Carl XVI Gustaf. Part of the program was a show with local stars and speakers, and the themes for the show were travel, development and future.
The station buildings along the City Tunnel are free from ads and instead ornated with works of different artists. On the concrete walls of Malmö Central you can see "Elsewhere" (video art) by Tania Ruiz Guitérrez, and Gunilla Klingberg has created a beautifully patterned concrete floor on the Triangeln station.
The City Tunnel project is partly financed by the European Union and run by Malmö City. The project aims to get more commuters and the citizens of Malmö to travel in a sustainable way.
