Crunchy architecture from Sweco

A gingerbread house should be big, sweet and designed by an architect. At least that’s what the Swedish city of Malmö had in mind when Sweco’s architectural office in Malmö was asked to create a gingerbread house for the inauguration of the City Tunnel.

The result was a 120-square meter gingerbread farmhouse in southern Swedish style, made from 750 kilos of dough and 80 litres of egg white. A full 500 kilos of icing sugar were used for the plastered facades.

“It has been an unusual but interesting experience to build this lovely gingerbread house,” says Sven Teder, who together with Sara Andersson is one of the responsible architects for the project.

The gingerbread house will be displayed on the ground floor of Malmö Arena starting on Friday, 3 December, and will be in place during the opening week of the City Tunnel, 5-10 December.

The project is a collaboration between Sweco, the City of Malmö, Continental Bakeries, Nordic Sugar, Ambrosia, Peabskolan, Frans Suells and Jörgen Kock High School.
