Maldivan President visits Sweco

Mohammed Nasheed, President of the Maldives, recently visited Sweden to accept the Anna Lindh Prize. During his trip to Sweden, Nasheed also visited Sweco to learn more about the waste management project Sweco is working on in the Maldives.

Mohammed Nasheed was recently honoured with the Anna Lindh Prize, partly in acknowledgement of the Maldives’ powerful focus on human impacts and rights in the debate on climate change. The Maldives face serious challenges in this context, since the island nation’s highest point sits only 1.8 meters above sea level.

For the past few years Sweco has been studying how waste management in the Maldives can be improved in the future.

“Mohammed Nasheed is highly aware of and committed to climate issues. He was very interested in finding out more about the waste management project Sweco is currently working on and also wanted to know what Sweco can contribute in other areas, such as  project management and procurement of infrastructure projects,” says Eva Nygren, President of Sweco Sweden.

The island paradise of the Maldives attracts many tourists every year, but more people means more waste and a greater impact on the environment. Sweco has therefore been chosen by the Maldivan Ministry of Environment to assist in finding a good solution for management of waste on the islands. In the assignment, Sweco has been given responsibility for detail design of the new waste management facility and preparation of drawings, technical solutions and possible financing models.
