Route optimisation for waste management company

Renova is a leading waste management company that serves western Sweden. The company’s operations span all stages of the waste chain from collection and recycling to energy extraction and deposit. For all stages, the common denominators are an explicit geographical connection and clear advantages in the ability to visualise and analyse operating data with the help of GIS.
Collection and processing of waste and recyclable material requires many and long transports. As a committed environmental company, Renova, is working on several fronts to reduce environmental impact these transports give rise to. Aside from route optimisation, Renova is using optimisation models for siting of new facilities. Together with Renova’s logistics departments, Sweco has prepared decision data in the form of maps that will provide guidance for selecting the best location for a new reloading station.

The often uneven inflow of container pick-ups orders  is planned on a daily basis. Some of the orders are outsourced to contractors in order to meet customer needs without requiring a larger fleet than necessary. In collaboration with Sweco, Renova has developed a tool to compile invoicing data by calculating the shortest route for these transports. The system has saved considerable time and contributed more accurate invoicing than the previous systems.

Because Renova is a municipal enterprise that operates in a market exposed to competition, it is är vital for the company to find new customers. As a tool for the sales force, Sweco has developed a map that shows the location of companies in western Sweden by area of business. With the help of the map the sales staff can identify the areas with good potential for customer growth.
