Major energy savings at Arlanda Airport

Terminal North is a new 30,000 square meter international terminal at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport with a high density of electrical wiring, piping, ducts and other installations. Sweco’s building service systems consultants have been responsible for all HVAC and sanitation planning, including control and sprinkler systems. The assignment covers areas using sophisticated technology such as baggage sorting and the check-in counters.

The project is aimed at bringing about a radical change in Arlanda’s energy systems and energy supply;

• A large-scale energy optimisation initiative in all terminals towards the goal of reducing the current energy consumption by 30-50%.
• Europe’s largest thermal energy storage facility is being built to enable seasonal storage of free-of-charge heating and cooling, making it possible to use the energy without any need for chillers or heat pumps.
• The new system configuration allows the use of low grade (free-of-charge) heating and cooling in nearby systems.

Aside from technical aspects, the assignments include extensive support for the development of Arlanda Energi’s work processes. This is being done, for example, through training of personnel, supervision of the work teams responsible for carrying out the energy conservation measures and development of aids/tools to guide the process of change from goal formulation and documentation to proposed measures and implementation.
