City Tunnel in Malmö
Enriching project #28 587 of 31 000. The City Tunnel under the city of Malmö is one of Sweden’s largest infrastructure projects, linking Sweden’s Skåne region with the Danish island of Zealand.

The City Tunnel project consists of a 17 km section of railway of which 6 km run through a tunnel under central Malmö, where two new underground stations have been built. The most complex structure in the project is a gigantic wiring bridge, a one-of-a-kind 350 m long steel structure equipped with a special lighting ramp, nothing similar exists anywhere in Europe. The underground construction places special demands on meticulous design work. The tunnel ceiling is not smooth but consists of numerous cavities and protrusions, for which reason Sweco has chosen to prepare the entire tunnel design in 3D.
Sweco has been involved in the project since the start in 1999, among other things through the provision of consulting services in the areas of geotechnical engineering, rock engineering, environmental technology, structural engineering and building service systems and engineering design. The tunnel opened in December 2010.
